I’m really excited to share this post because it’s been one of the most fun and enlightening projects I’ve had the privilege of being involved with. For my job, I help coordinate an initiative called Hungry for Truth which is all about connecting South Dakotans to the farmers who grow their food.
Across the Table with Hungry for Truth
Across the Table is a web series by Hungry for Truth that is hosted by the owner of Oh My Cupcakes! in Sioux Falls, Melissa Johnson and features a recipe as well as a Q&A with a local farmer. This episode includes tips on baking the perfect cupcake (and we all know my love for cupcakes!), and we even got to shoot behind the scenes in the kitchen at Oh My Cupcakes!. Yes, I was having a major fan girl moment.
Since we use a lot of butter when baking cupcakes (Yass, buttercream!), we also interviewed local dairy farmer Annelies Seffrood for this episode. Dairy farms are some of the best farms to visit, and it was extra special to shoot on-location for the Q&A portion of this episode. Did you know that every load of milk is tested for antibiotics before it can enter the food supply? If a dairy cow is sick and needs antibiotics to recover (just like you or me), her milk is separated and will not be used for human consumption.
Watch this episode for more fun facts on dairy, and you can also read the Hungry for Truth blog for answers to your questions about hormones in dairy. Learning about where our food comes from is a continual journey, and when it comes to spending time in the kitchen it really makes preparing your next recipe even more enjoyable. Happy baking!
