This post started out as a very specific search for a very specific need, which spiraled into me ordering bags on bags on bags in my quest to find the perfect 15-Inch Laptop Travel Purse. During this experience, I realized I’m probably not the only person searching for the unicorn of travel purses, and I wanted to share my findings with you.
What To Look for in a Travel Purse
I have the opportunity to travel quite bit personally, but also professionally. For shorter weekend trips or business trips that involve flying, I typically will only pack a carry-on versus checking a bag. This means the rest of my personal items all have to fit into my purse, which of course has to fit under my airplane seat. Especially when I’m flying for business, my 15-inch MacBook Pro needs fit comfortably into my purse along with all of my other items. I also really wanted to find a travel purse with sturdy, comfortable handles for when you have to hike across the airport and a long enough handle drop that makes it easy to swing the bag onto your shoulder when you’re deplaning or in a hurry. Not to mention, I wanted the purse to be stylish enough to use as a tote, but also high-quality enough that it will last awhile. Bonus points for a having a couple of pockets for organization.
To sum it up, here’s a list of everything I was looking for in the perfect travel purse:
- Must be able to fit:
- 15-inch Macbook Pro and Charger
- iPad Air for hotspot and e-reading
- Notebook for meeting notes or a Book for vacations
- Smaller, Crossbody Purse for dinners, exploring, etc.
- Sturdy, Comfortable Handles
- Long Handle Drop
- At least 1-2 pockets for organizing
- Stylish and High-Quality
Dagne Dover vs Lo & Sons
When it comes to travel, there are two stylish brands that stand out as a go-to that I really wanted to try. Dagne Dover and Lo & Sons both offer laptop bags that can seamlessly go from day to night, and their bags also look chic enough for business and personal travel. Both of their websites are very detailed, and really make shopping a breeze. (The Lo & Sons site even shows photos of different height models wearing each bag, which is something I really appreciate as someone who’s on the shorter side.) However, I really wanted to see the bags in person and try them out for myself before deciding. I ordered five bags in total to try out.
The Dagne Dover Legend Tote is the 15-inch Laptop Purse option that Dagne Dover offers. It’s a beautiful bag and has more than enough space to fit all of my items, and this bag actually checked every box on the must-have list. It offers a padded laptop pocket and plenty of other pockets for organizing. It really is a dream bag. However, for my very petite frame, it was unfortunately too much bag. It was a too large, and the bag overwhelmed me. Plus, the handles seemed a little stiff for my liking. However, if you are an average height to taller person, I would highly recommend this laptop travel purse!
This is ultimately the bag I ended up selecting. The Dagne Dover Classic Tote is the smaller version of the Legend Tote, and it’s designed to fit a 13-inch laptop. It has all of The handles are very comfortable, and they’re the perfect length to swing the bag onto my shoulder. While the laptop pocket doesn’t fit my laptop, the purse is large enough to place my laptop in the center of the tote. It still fits all of my necessary items, and it’s the perfect size for me to carry through the airport. The black and gold colors fit my wardrobe perfectly, and it’s a very sleek bag. For an extra bonus, both of the Dagne Dover Legend and Classic totes offer a clip for your keys so they don’t get lost in the bottom of your bag. (I’ve had to scramble through my purse a few too many times at the airport searching for my car keys to drive home after a long day of travel, and this is a huge perk.) The bags also offer a removable bottle holder which is the perfect spot to slip my Swell water bottle.
I’ve been admiring the O.M.G. bag by Lo and Sons (pictured on the left) for quite some time. It’s nylon, has two super handy pockets for shoes, and also has a very handy back sleeve that secures your bag over your luggage handle. If I were looking for a travel purse specifically for an international trip, this would be it. It would also be a fantastic overnight bag. It fits my laptop, all of my required items and then some. However, for day-to-day business travel, I found the narrow top made it difficult to easily slip my laptop in and out. Especially for a tight airplane space, I knew this probably wouldn’t work the best. Plus, the handle drop wasn’t quite as long as I would have liked, although it does come is a detachable longer strap. Overall, a very lovely bag!
This was one of my absolute favorite travel totes that I came across, and it was even better in person. (pictured on the right) The Seville Tote is leather, with a removable liner (you can pick the color of your choice!) which is great for keeping the inside of your bag clean and long-term wear. The Seville tote has a 15-inch or 13-inch size, which is perfect for fitting your laptop. I would have kept this bag, however, I found it was just a little too narrow to fit my smaller, crossbody purse inside of it. Bummer!
If you’re strictly looking for a stylish laptop bag for travel, this is your bag. The Brookline Laptop Bag by Lo and Sons (pictured in the center) also offers the back sleeve that secures your laptop over your carry-on luggage handle. This means it’s super easy to get from gate to gate in the airport. As a laptop bag and not a purse, this bag didn’t quite fit all of my needs, and it was on the smaller side of the laptop travel purses I considered.
If you’re looing for a weekender bag, here’s a post on my favorite weekender bag from Everlane. Lo & Sons also has a Catalina weekender bag I’ve been dying to try.
